The Unstoppable Church: How Generosity and Mercy Unlock God’s Full Potential

Have you ever had something in your life that had incredible potential but never quite took off? A project, a relationship, a business idea—something that could have been great, but for one reason or another, didn’t reach its full potential?

There’s nothing more frustrating than unrealized potential. And while it’s disappointing when it happens in our personal lives, it’s even more tragic when it happens in the Church.

The Church Was Designed to Be Unstoppable

For over 2,000 years, the Church has been an unstoppable force. It has survived persecution, built hospitals, ended slavery, fought injustice, and faithfully preached the gospel to every generation. Whenever there has been a crisis, it has often been followers of Jesus who showed up first to bring hope and relief. The Church was never meant to be passive or weak—it was designed by Jesus to be the hope of the world.

And yet, today, too many churches are operating at half their potential. The mission of Jesus is just as urgent as ever, but in many places, the Church isn’t making the impact it was designed to make.

Why?

Because too often, we aren’t bringing our first and our best.

Jesus’ Challenge: A Call to Generosity and Mercy

In Matthew 23:23, Jesus called out the Pharisees—the religious leaders of His day—because they had mastered one aspect of faithfulness while neglecting another:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill, and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.”

The Pharisees were meticulous about tithing, down to the smallest detail. They gave 10% of everything, even their spices. But their hearts were cold. They lacked love, compassion, and justice. They were generous, but not merciful.

And today, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.

Many people in our culture are passionate about justice and mercy. We love serving the poor, advocating for the marginalized, and making a difference in the world. But when it comes to generosity—when it comes to tithing and financially supporting the mission of the Church—that’s where we hesitate.

But Jesus didn’t say, “Just focus on justice and mercy.” He also didn’t say, “Only tithe and don’t worry about loving people.” He said we must do both.

The Formula for an Unstoppable Church

When generosity and mercy are separated, the Church becomes ineffective.

• Generosity without mercy = Cold religion. This was the Pharisees’ problem. They followed the rules but didn’t love people. They gave, but their hearts were hardened. And their faith became a checklist rather than a mission.

• Mercy without generosity = Wishful thinking. Many people today want to help the poor, fight injustice, and serve the world—but without financial sacrifice, those efforts are limited. The early Church in Acts grew because they gave sacrificially and cared for the poor. That’s why they saw people coming to Jesus every single day!

“They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need… and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” – Acts 2:45-47

What Happens When the Church Does Both?

At Peak City, we’ve seen firsthand what happens when a church is fueled by both generosity and mercy. Every time someone makes a decision to follow Jesus, every time we meet a need through See The Need, every time we send resources to disaster relief efforts or sponsor children in Honduras—it’s because people gave their first and their best.

But here’s the truth: The impact we’re making today is a direct result of the generosity of people years ago. And if we don’t continue to bring our first and best, eventually, the ripple effect stops.

That’s why this moment matters.

The Invitation: Be Part of an Unstoppable Church

Jesus didn’t just talk about love—He proved it through generosity. He didn’t just say He cared—He gave everything.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

The ultimate example of bringing our first and best is Jesus Himself. He gave His life to rescue us, not holding anything back. And because of that, we have salvation, hope, and a mission to be part of something unstoppable.

So here’s the question: Will you step into the mission?

When we give generously and love sacrificially, we unlock the full potential of the Church. We become the kind of movement that truly changes the world.

Let’s build an unstoppable church together.
